Vasanti Magic Liner ( $20 for 0.13 oz) is a clear gel like liner that is supposed to turn any eyeshadow into a liquid/gel liner. The idea is quite novel, in fact, you wont see many popular brands with this particular product. The only one I can think of is, INGLOT’s Duraline, but that is another story all together. In Vasanti’s own words, it is “Abracadabra! This magic potion turns any powder eyeshadow into a long lasting liquid liner. Dip the Magic Liner brush into any powder eyeshadow or shimmer powder to transform it into an intensely pigmented, smudge proof liquid liner.“
This eyeliner is as good as the eyeshadow you use with it. I initially tried this with a mediocre drug store pigment and was utterly disappointed. It is not the eyeliner’s fault though; if you think about it, if you get any liquid liner, it’s utility is highly dependent on the pigmentation of its color. Once I used it with a high quality eyeshadow, it was a different story. And when I tried it with a MAC pigment, it was a fairy-tale ending. Once mixed together, it created a smooth and lasting line. I think it is a little overpriced for what it is, but if you think about it, it will save you a lot of money if you like a colorful liner much too much. It may also just put all your pigments to use (finally). The product inside sure is impressive, but I do have a slight complain. This thing works best with a liner brush. I don’t think its own brush is very reliable, you see it kind of broke on me. I am fine with it, though, as it was for the best. The brush is kind of wimpy, for the lack of better words and since you do have to tissue if off after every use, it gets less sturdy every time. The lines it created were also less than perfect. (If anyone from Vasanti is reading this, please look into it, the product is wonderful, but the packaging needs a *little* work.) Other than that, I quite like this liner and despite the wimpy brush, I’d be willing to repurchase. If you need more convincing, just look at the pictures.
The visual proof:
I used three Lancome eyeshadows for the first three swatches. The last one is MAC Old Gold Pigment – see how wonderful the color pay-off is? If you own a lot of pigments, just get this eyeliner, it is a no-brainer.
Overall thoughts: If you want unlimited options for colorful eyeliner without breaking the bank, get this eyeliner. If you want to put all those pigments to use, get this eyeliner. (But also get an pointy eyeliner brush!). Despite it being less than perfect in terms of packaging, it is a good product to have in your stash.
