Is there a product that you have always wanted to try but never got around to trying?  I had been wanting to try Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer ($44 Cdn or $36 US for 50 ml) for the longest of time but for some reason or another, I was never quite able to. So when Sephora had their VIB Sale in April, I thought it would be a good time to finally indulge in things I had been putting off for a while.  So begins our story…

It is a clear jelly like fluid that is supposed to be the last thing you put on prior to foundation application. A cocktail of Vitamins A & E, grape seed extract and green tea, it creates a clear canvas out of your skin, ready to be filled with colour (or not). It should be softly dabbed with fingers and not applied like moisturizer. If dabbed on recklessly, it fails to create the desired effect. I did so this first instance and was insanely disappointed in the product. But when softly dabbed with fingers, it left my skin glowing and fresh and indeed left it as a clear canvas for foundation application. Leaving the skin healthy and supple, it quickly absorbs and locks your foundation. I used my trusted DiorSkin Nude Natural Glow Hydrating Make Up Foundation and it felt like I was not wearing foundation and my skin looked flawless, not the foundation. I mean it is always the case with my beloved Dior foundation, but it became even more prevalent in this case. Why would you want a primer, anyways? Well, besides preparing your skin for foundation, it elongates the wear of your make-up, too. My make-up was in place through the day, even surviving my Pilates class! I love this primer, it made my skin glow. In fact, I could just pair this with a little bit of concealer in my problem areas (read: bags under my eyes) and I am good to go! Brownie points: it does make your skin camera ready as it claims. You literally look airbrushed! So even if you may not like adding another step to your tedious make-up routine, it is a nice addition to your stash for special occasions, especially when you are going to be photographed. The packaging is also sleek, practical. I adore the pump system, but I have heard from people who have long used this, that it wastes the product when it’s about to end.

The long & short of it:

  • A cocktail of skin blessing ingredients such as Vitamins A&E, grape seed extract and green tea.
  • Dot & dab for the desired effect.
  • Creates a clear canvas for foundation application, elongates the wear of make-up and makes the skin camera ready.
  • $44/Cdn or $36/US for 50 ml.
  • Practical pump system (minimal bacteria spread)
Will I repurchase? Yes, I will. It is a handy tool to have in your stash and really does make a difference.

Overall rating: B+
